Chelsea Must Sell Players to Meet UEFA Rules Before Registering New Signings
Chelsea must generate over £60 million in player sales before they can register any new signings for next season’s European competitions, according to The UK Times.
Despite earning around £60 million from their Club World Cup campaign, UEFA’s financial regulations prevent the club from using that revenue to offset their Champions League registration costs.
This comes shortly after Chelsea were handed a record-breaking fine by UEFA for past financial breaches, tightening the pressure on the London club to comply with the governing body’s rules.
UEFA’s ‘List A’ regulation requires that any new players registered for European competitions must be balanced by adequate outgoing transfer income. As of now, summer arrivals such as Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo, and Mamadou Sarr remain ineligible for European action.
Romeo Lavia and Wesley Fofana are also yet to be registered under the List A, leaving Chelsea in a race against time to offload players and bring their books in line.
Failure to raise the necessary funds could see Chelsea unable to field some of their top signings in the Champions League next season.
