Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has commended Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen after his brilliant performance helped Galatasaray S.K. secure the Turkish Süper Lig title in a decisive and memorable campaign.
Osimhen was the star of the final match that confirmed the championship, scoring twice to guide the Turkish giants to victory and seal the league triumph in emphatic fashion. His performance once again highlighted his importance to the team and his growing reputation as one of Africa’s most influential footballers on the global stage.
Reacting to the achievement, Peter Obi took to his verified X account to celebrate the forward, describing him as a proud ambassador of Nigeria whose achievements continue to project the country positively across the world. He noted that Osimhen’s consistency, discipline, and determination have made him a role model for young Nigerians.
Obi stressed that the striker’s success is proof of the vast talent Nigeria possesses, adding that with the right leadership, structure, and investment, many more young athletes could rise to similar global prominence.
He praised Osimhen’s resilience and commitment, stating that his journey should inspire Nigerian youth to believe in the value of hard work and excellence, regardless of the challenges they face.
The former governor also used the opportunity to reflect on the state of sports development in Nigeria, expressing concern about what he described as the continued neglect of the sector. According to him, this lack of adequate support has limited the potential of many gifted athletes who could otherwise excel internationally.
He further argued that sports remain a powerful tool for youth empowerment, national unity, and economic growth, urging for greater attention and investment in the sector.
Obi concluded by reiterating his belief in a “new Nigeria” where all sectors, including sports, are developed simultaneously to ensure balanced national progress and opportunity for all citizens.
