Real Madrid’s plans to officially unveil José Mourinho as their new manager have reportedly hit an unexpected setback following fresh political tension within the club’s presidential elections.
According to reports from Portugal, Mourinho had already been scheduled to be announced as the new Real Madrid manager on Monday after reaching a full agreement with the Spanish giants. Preparations for his unveiling were also said to be complete before events suddenly changed behind the scenes.
The delay is reportedly connected to the ongoing presidential elections at the Santiago Bernabéu, where current president Florentino Pérez is now facing opposition from rival candidate Enrique Riquelme.
Riquelme has reportedly intensified his campaign by opening his electoral headquarters directly opposite the Bernabéu Stadium, creating uncertainty around several planned decisions at the club — including Mourinho’s appointment.
If Pérez had gone unchallenged, the veteran football administrator would have automatically secured another term on Sunday, paving the way for Mourinho’s confirmation just 24 hours later.
However, the latest development has forced Real Madrid to temporarily suspend the announcement, with reports suggesting Mourinho may now have to wait until June 7 before his future becomes clearer.
The Portuguese manager had already travelled back to Lisbon amid the uncertainty surrounding the situation.
There are also fears inside the club that Mourinho’s return could completely collapse if Pérez fails to win the election. Sources claim the rival camp may prefer a different managerial direction should there be a change in leadership.
Mourinho’s expected return to Madrid has already generated massive reactions across Europe, with many fans eager to see the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Roma boss back at the Bernabéu for a second spell.
The 63-year-old previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning the LaLiga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup during his first stint in Spain.
Despite the uncertainty, Mourinho is still believed to be the leading candidate for the job, although the final decision now appears to depend heavily on the outcome of the presidential elections.
